Calapooia
Crossing is an energy efficient affordable sub-division in Sutherlin,
Oregon consisting of 16 dwelling units divided into five single family
homes, four duplexes, and one accessible triplex. A common laundry
building and office offered the opportunity for a 3.9 KW photovoltaic
array. All units utilize a passive solar design, oriented with a long open
façade to the south, and spaced to not shade each other from the low
winter sun (illustrated in the computer generated sun study below).
Exposed stained concrete floors with perimeter and under-slab insulation
act as thermal mass in the winter, while sun shades block the hot summer
sun. Two buildings, one single family house and one duplex, of the 11 that
cover the site are demonstration buildings that not only incorporate the
above mentioned passive solar design, but also team a solar heated storage
tank with an on-demand gas hot water heater for in-slab radiant heating.
Calapooia Crossing provides an opportunity for high quality energy
efficient living to a wide range of needs in the affordable housing
market, from those with disabilities, though standard rentals, all the way
to home ownership |
